INTRODUCTION OF NECK MUSCLES
NECK ANATOMY ARE AS FOLLOWS-
1) LONGUS CAPITIS
Origin : Anterior tubercle of C3 – C6 vertebrae.
Insertion : Basillary portion of occipital bone .
Action : Flexion of head and neck.
Nerve supply : Cervical plexus.
Blood supply : Deep cervical artery .
2) LONGUS COLI
Origin : Anterior tubercle and anterior surface of vertebral bodies (C 3- C 7 ).
Insertion : Anterior arch of atlas .
Action : Neck flexion , rotation and lateral bend.
Nerve supply : cervical and brachial plexus.
Blood supply : Deep cervical artery .
3) ANTERIOR SCALENE
Origin : Anterior tubercle of transverse process of C3- C6 .
Insertion : Scalene tubercle of first rib.
Action : Elevation of first rib, flexion and lateral bend of neck.
Nerve supply : Brachial plexus.
Blood supply : Ascending cervical artery .
4) MIDDLE SCALENE
Origin : Posterior tubercle of transverse process of C2- C7.
Insertion : on Upper surface of first rib behind the subclavian artery.
Action : Flexion and lateral bend of neck.
Nerve supply : Brachial plexus C3 – C8.
5) POSTERIOR SCALENE
Origin : Posterior Tubercle of transverse process of C5- C7.
Insertion : Second rib ( lateral surface).
Action : Flexion and lateral bend of neck
Nerve supply : Brachial plexus C7- C8.
6) STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID
Origin :
from Sternal head – Anterior surface of manubrium .
from Clavicular head – Medial one – third of clavicle.
Insertion : on Mastoid process and lateral 1/2 of superior nuchal line.
Action : Neck flexion.
Nerve supply : Spinal accessory nerve.
7) SPLENIUS
Origin : Ligamentum nuchae.
Insertion : Mastoid process and superior nuchal line.
Action : Extension and lateral bend of neck.
Nerve supply : Dorsal primary Rami of spinal nerve.
