BACK MUSCLE ANATOMY

INTRODUCTION OF BACK MUSCLE

 Back muscle anatomy are

1) TRAPEZIUS

Origin : Spinous process C7 , T1-T12 , occipital bone.
Insertion : Clavicle ( lateral 1/3 ) , Acromions process and spine of scapula.
Action :
– Elevates and retracts the scapula
– Stabilizes the scapula .
Nerve supply :
– Accessory nerve

– C3 , C4 branches.

2) LATISSIMUS DORSI

Origin :
– Spines of T7 to T12 .
– Posterior third of scapula.
Insertion : Floor of tubercular groove.
Action : Extends and medial rotation of arm.

Nerve supply : Thoracodorsal nerve (C6- C8).

3) LEVATOR SCAPULAE

Origin : C1 – C4 transverse process

Insertion : Medial border of scapula from superior angle of the spine.
Action : Dorsal scapular nerve.

Nerve supply : scapula elevation .

4) RHOMBOID MINOR

Origin : C7 to T1 spinous process.
Insertion : Spine of scapula

Action : scapula retraction.
Nerve supply : Dorsal scapular nerve.

5) RHOMBOID MAJOR

Origin : T2-T5 spinous process.
Insertion : medial border of scapula.
Action : scapula retraction.

Nerve supply :Dorsal scapular nerve.

6) SUPRASPINATUS

Origin : Supraspinous fossa of scapula ( medial two – third ) .
Insertion : Greater tubercle of humerus ( upper impression ).
Action : Shoulder abduction.

Nerve supply : Suprascapular nerve.

7) INFRASPINATUS

Origin : Infraspinatus fossa of scapula ( medial two – third ).
Insertion : Greater tubercle of humerus ( middle impression )
Action : Arm lateral rotation.

Nerve supply : Suprascapular nerve.
