WELCOME TO FACIAL MUSCLE ANATOMY

1) CORRUGATOR SUPERCILLI

Origin : From the medial end of superciliary arch.

Insertion:  Mid- eyebrow skin.

Action : Forehead vertical lines as in frowning.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( temporal branch ).

 

2) ORBUCULARIS OCULI

Origin :
– Maxilla ( frontal process ), Frontal bone ( nasal part ).
– Medial palpebral ligament ( lateral part )
– The lacrimal fascia and  the posterior lacrimal crest .

Insertion :
– To the concentric rings return to point of origin .
– To lateral palpebral raphe.
– Passes laterally in front of the tarsal plates of eyelids to the lateral palpebral raphe.

Action :
– Protection of the eyelid  by closing the eyelids.
– Lacrimal sac dilation .

Nerve supply : Temporal and zygomatic branches of facial nerve.

3) PROCERUS

Origin : from nasal bone and the lateral nasal cartilage ( upper part ).

Insertion : Skin between eyebrows, and on nasal bridge

Action : Transverse wrinkles.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( temporal branch ).

4) COMPRESSOR NARIS

Origin : Maxilla ( lateral to nose ).

Insertion : Aponeurosis ( across the dorsum of nose ).

Action : compression of nasal aperture.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

5) DIALATOR NARIS

Origin : Maxilla ( over lateral incisor )

Insertion : nose alar cartilage .

Action : dilation of nasal aperture.

Nerve supply :FROM facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

6) DEPRESSOR SEPTI

Origin : medial incisor  of maxilla.

Insertion : Nasal septum ( lower mobile part ).

Action : Inferior pull of nose.

Nerve supply : FROM facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

7) ORBUCULARIS ORIS

Origin : Maxilla ( Superior incisivus ), mandible ( inferior incisivus ) .

Insertion : to angle of mouth and lips .

Action : Closure of lip and protrudes lip.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

 

8) BUCCINATOR

Origin :
– Maxilla opposite molar teeth ( upper fibers ).
– Mandible , opposite molar teeth ( lower fiber ).
– Pterygomandibular raphe ( middle fiber ).

Insertion :
– to upper lip (  upper fibers )
– to lower lip ( lower fibers )
– middle fibres decussate .

Action : Flatenning of cheeks against teeth and gums , whistling muscle.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

9) LEVATOR LABII SUPERIORIS ALAEQUE NASI

Origin : Maxillar frontal process .

Insertion : Nose ( alar cartilage ) and upper lip .

Action : Dilation of nostrils and lifts the upper lip .

Nerve supply :FROM Facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

10) ZYGOMATICUS MAJOR

Origin : Lateral surface of zygomatic bone ( posterior aspect ).

Insertion :AT the skin ( at angle of mouth ).

Action : pulling of angle upwards and laterally as in smiling .

Nerve supply :  FROM Facial nerve ( zygomatic and buccal branch ).

11) LEVATOR LABII SUPERIORIS

Origin : maxilla ( infraorbital margin )

Insertion : AT skin of upper lip ( upper lateral half ).

Action : Upper lip elevation .

Nerve supply : FROM facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

12) LEVATOR ANGULI ORIS

Origin : Maxilla ( just below infraorbital foramen ).

Insertion : AT the Skin ( of angle of the mouth ).

Action : Elevation of angle of mouth .

Nerve supply : FROM facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

13) ZYGOMATICUS MINOR

Origin : Zygomatic bone ( anterior aspect of lateral surface ).

Insertion : to upper lip ( medial to its angle ).

Action : elevation of upper lip.

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( Zygomatic and buccal branch ).

14) DEPRESSOR ANGULI ORIS

Origin : From oblique line of mandible.

Insertion :AT the Skin ( at angle of mouth ).

Action : Draws angle of mouth ( laterally and downwards ).

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( mandibular branch ).

15) DEPRESSOR LABII INFERIORIS

Origin : mandible ( anterior part of oblique line ).

Insertion : Lower lip ( at midline ).

Action : Downward movement of lower lip .

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( mandibular branch).

16) MENTALIS

Origin : from mandible ( inferior to incisor teeth ).

Insertion :AT the skin ( of chin ).

Action : Elevation and protrudes lower lip as it wrinkles the skin on chin .

Nerve supply : FROM facial nerve ( mandibular branch ).

17) RISORIUS

Origin : Masseter muscle fascia.

Insertion : AT the Skin ( at angle of mouth ).

Action : Retraction of angle of mouth .

Nerve supply : FROM Facial nerve ( buccal branch ).

18) PLATYSMA

Origin : pectoral and deltoid fasciae upper part .

Insertion : Base of mandible ( anterior fiber ), skin of lower face and lip ( posterior fiber ).

Action : Releasing of pressure on skin , mandible depression , downward pull of angle of mouth.

Nerve supply : FROM facial nerve ( cervical branch ).
